Thani Oruvan Review – Thani Oruvan is a Tamil action thriller movie released in 2015. Mithran an IPS officer wants to take on organized crime that happens in the society by tracing the links of unrelated petty crimes reported on a daily basis to an organized crime source. But at the source is a fearsome villain Siddharth Abhimanyu who is invincible. Will Mithran be successful in this challenge is the plot of Thani Oruvan.
Director M.Raja has given a very racy thriller that is entertaining for most of the parts. After a long time this is a good break for Jayam Ravi. The script has been developed with the sole intention of giving a compelling thriller. They have failed to establish the core conflict very well. The reason why Mithran is so passionate about revealing the organized crime is not established very well as that is the core of the movie. The strength of the movie is Arvind Swamy. He has essayed the character of a fearsome, intelligent and unapologetic badass guy very well. The clashes between Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swamy are done well.
It was so pleasing to see that there was no bar song, unnecessary comedy track. Hope other filmmakers take clue from this and start concentrating on the strength of the screenplay rather than giving into the temptation of masala formula.
High Points: A very engaging script, Arvind Swamy’s performance and the character of Siddharth Abhimanyu, No unnecessary bar sequences and comedy tracks
Low Points: The length of the movie is bit long for the plot reducing this would have made it more racy, There should have been more effort to create the core conflict very well which would have made this more impactful. There are few loopholes in the plot, which do not get highlighted due to the raciness of the script.
Overall Thani Oruvan is definitely a very engaging thriller that needs to be watched in the theaters.

Interesting! Not in the local theatres here though! I hope you do try Kunjiramayanam some time 🙂
Yes waiting for it to release here in the theaters as you are waiting for Thani oruvan 🙂
It won’t release in the local theatres here unless a big hero is associated with it 😀
Ok… It is running in Kochi… Thought it might release near your place as well as it is doing well
Well… it seems more like our Sherlock Holmes… this sort of detective stuff is not easy to make(: … its sophiticated… but there are enough ditective programs that would have easier guided the making of a perfect detective movie with plot… your seen Oceans 11, 12 and 13… you must… they are gangters and threifts but even then funny guys and good guys(:… I think that’s brilliant… making a thriller in a way without the crimes and violence and negative feelings(:
Thani Oruvan is more on the lines of fight of good vs evil than a detective script… Yes in a way it is similar to the rivalry between Sherlock and Prof. Moriarty… With Oceans you are talking about a genre of movies called as heist movies… and your description fits well for those movies…
Box Office hits need Out-of-the-Box Thinking
As we all witnessed during the past 10 days or so, ‘Thani Oruvan’ got rave reviews and has been accepted by the film industry and audience as a benchmark movie. There is a transition happening in the Indian movie industry; that is driven by the audience. Today movie goers are well aware of the worldly events. The life-cycle of audience taste is short, meaning audience preference is undergoing change at a higher rate than ever before. The typical romance movie is no longer going to pull the audience. It had been already exploited by the uncountable number of movies in all the possible formats. So what is next? That is called ‘Thani Oruvan’ way! – A strong theme, embedded with authentic data & logic.
How it all started? Way back in 2013, director Mr. Mohan Raja met with a group of consultants from Fhyzics Business Consultants Pvt. Ltd., specializes in business consulting and business analysis (An EEP of International Institute of Business Analysis, Canada and REP of International Requirements Engineering Board, Germany). By that time, Mr. Raja was thinking about the story for at least 3 years. The one question he asked the group of consultants was “I want to make the movie authentic and different, how you could contribute?” Also Fhyzics was looking for opportunities to explore the movie industry. Subsequently, Fhyzics team met the director few times and demonstrated how they can make it different. It clicked, and Fhyzics got its maiden movie project.
The assignment given to Fhyzics team was data and logic research for the movie project. The team researched IPS training, minute-by-minute daily routines of IPS probationers and officers, costumes, usage of words & terminologies, technologies, background, analysis methods etc. The team also did intensive research on crimes both at national and international level from 1990 onwards to till-date. Organized the crimes under different heads and drawn the linkages. Prepared crime charts, time-to-time emotional graphs, hero vs. villain rise & fall maps etc. Even Fhyzics created a PPT that was presented to the producers by Mr. Raja to give them a holistic view of the movie. Massive amount of data and information were collected, organized in SharePoint (a Microsoft technology), then distilled and presented on weekly basis to the director for the entire duration of the movie making and it has been judiciously consumed in the movie without affecting the entertainment element of it. At Fhyzics, we profoundly thank Mr. Raja for the opportunity and helping us in launching our services in the movie industry with this landmark movie, ‘Thani Oruvan’.
